The Swing — Jean-Honore Fragonard Series

Inspired by The Swing by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, this colorway was created for my Art of the Louvre subscription series and draws directly from one of the most playful — and scandalous — paintings of the Rococo period.

At first glance, The Swing appears lighthearted and romantic. Look closer, and the story sharpens: a woman suspended midair, a lover hidden below, a shoe kicked loose in flirtation, and another figure in the shadows pulling her back — perhaps a husband, perhaps a guardian of propriety. The entire scene is a study in tension, indulgence, and movement, wrapped in lush color and theatrical excess.

That sense of motion and layered narrative guided this dye process.

Soft blush pinks, verdant greens, and airy aquas move across the skein in sweeping transitions, echoing the foliage, silk dresses, and dappled light of the painting. Subtle sparkle adds dimension without overpowering the palette, allowing the color relationships to do the storytelling — much like Fragonard’s brushwork itself.

As fabric grows, the colorway reveals rhythm and contrast, making it especially well suited to garments, shawls, and projects that benefit from flow and visual intrigue.

No two skeins are identical. Variations in tone, saturation, and color placement are expected and celebrated as part of the hand-dyed process.

For larger projects, alternating skeins is recommended for the most even color flow.

Turnaround Time:
Please allow 4–6 weeks for dye-to-order yarns, especially during peak seasons. Each skein is dyed and finished individually to ensure balance, depth, and consistency.
