Mourning Dove— Hand-Dyed Wool Roving
Mourning Dove— Hand-Dyed Wool Roving
Soft, quiet, and beautifully understated, Mourning Dove was inspired by the subtle watercolor palette of one of our most familiar backyard birds.
Rather than the simple brown and gray we often associate with mourning doves, the inspiration reveals a surprisingly complex range of color: soft blush, dusty mauve, smoky plum, warm cream, muted gray, and the faintest washes of blue-green.
Those colors become especially beautiful on wool roving. Deep plum and wine drift into hazy lavender and blush, while stretches of natural cream are touched with pale aqua, soft green, and warm neutral tones. The colors move into one another much like watercolor spreading across paper, leaving plenty of lighter space for the deeper shades to breathe.
The result is a gentle, atmospheric braid with enough contrast to create beautiful movement once spun—quiet from a distance, but full of unexpected color up close.
Spun, this braid creates a yarn full of movement and depth—subtle transitions, moments of brightness, and grounding tones that anchor the palette. It is a colorway that evolves in your hands, much like the ideas that inspired it.
