Flor de Selva — Frida Kahlo Series

Inspired by Frida Kahlo’s Self-Portrait with Bonito, Flor de Selva—“Flower of the Jungle”—draws its palette from the lush, living world surrounding the artist.

Layered shades of turquoise, teal, blue-green, sage, and leafy green flow through the skein, softened by misty blue-gray and pale natural tones. Occasional touches of warmer green and yellow echo the foliage and flowers of the painting, creating a colorway that feels botanical, luminous, and quietly complex.

Rather than reproducing the portrait literally, Flor de Selva explores the landscape of color within it—the dense leaves, cool shadows, weathered greens, and flashes of light that frame Kahlo’s unmistakable presence.

Flor de Selva is part of the Laughing Cat Fibers Art Collection, where paintings become palettes and color becomes another way of experiencing the work.

Hand dyed in small batches by Laughing Cat Fibers. Because each skein is individually dyed, variations between skeins are part of the beauty of hand-dyed yarn.

The constantly changing texture of Early Morning Rain is a beautiful showcase for Flor de Selva. Turquoise, teal, soft blue, leafy green, yellow, and subtle touches of warmer color shift through the different stitch patterns, allowing each part of the palette to emerge in its own way.

Openwork and textured sections break up the color transitions, while the distinctive knitted fringe gives Flor de Selva even more opportunity for movement. The result captures the same lush, layered feeling that inspired the colorway—a wonderful example of how a richly variegated yarn can become even more dynamic when paired with texture.
