Sant’s painting does not depict the battle itself. Instead, it centers the interior lives of those left to watch—three figures embodying resolve, fear, and grief, bound together by uncertainty. It is a study in emotional labor: the quiet, often invisible work of holding steady while decisions, conflicts, and consequences unfold elsewhere.

This work felt unavoidable in the current moment. We are living in a time shaped by prolonged uncertainty—where many experience history not through direct action, but through anticipation, vigilance, and the strain of watching events ripple outward in real time.
